This first mission is expected to be carried out on a Starship spacecraft, currently in development at SpaceX’s Texas facilities. 2024 is the chosen launch window by Elon Musk and his teams, a window that only opens every 26 months when Earth comes between Mars and the sun in a straight line, lasting three weeks.

SpaceX won’t be the first, as the Exomars mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Roscosmos, the Russian agency, is set to take off on September 20, 2022, with a landing on June 10, 2023.

But the Red Planet is not the only focus of SpaceX. The company is in the race (and in a good position) to be part of the NASA’s Artemis program.

The uses of the BFR could also diversify in the coming years. Musk suggests that this rocket could also be used to transport passengers on Earth between any points on the planet in less than an hour – and perhaps even connect our planet to a lunar outpost.

“This will enable the creation of a lunar base. It’s 2017. We should already have a lunar base. Why isn’t it already the case?” Musk stated during his presentation.

SpaceX is developing a massive rocket to colonize Mars by 2024

At the end of September 2016, Elon Musk unveiled his Mars colonization project. A year later, during the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla provided details on his grand Martian ambitions, which involve the development of an impressive reusable rocket known as the BFR, standing for “Big Fucking Rocket” (yes, you read that correctly).

Objective: Mars 2024

The project’s timeline remains unchanged, with the company still planning to conduct its first manned flight to Mars by 2024, six years ahead of NASA. This ambitious timeline involves overcoming numerous complex challenges, such as space radiation, which is harmful to humans. An unmanned mission should take place two years earlier. Several cargo ships are expected to depart, one to locate the best source of water and another to establish a propellant production facility, with the goal of making Mars more hospitable for the initial colonists.

These pioneers are set to arrive on Mars in 2024 aboard the BFR, according to Musk’s plans. This rocket will be enormous, standing over 100 meters tall and 9 meters wide, with space for 40 cabins that can accommodate 2-3 people each. In total, it should be able to carry a payload of 150 tons. Additionally, the replacement for the famous Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets will be refueled during its journey (a distance of 75 million kilometers) by several tanker spacecraft.

Other Uses for the BFR

Elon Musk has also announced his intention to use the BFR to establish a base on the Moon, which he is already considering naming “Moon Base Alpha.” Interestingly, the vehicle should not require refueling for the nearly 400,000-kilometer journey. “It’s 2017; we should already have a lunar base,” exclaimed the SpaceX founder.

Finally, the giant rocket could also serve for international flights through low Earth orbits, similar to what Virgin Galactic plans to do.
